Faculty Research

Doing original research is a vital part of any chemistry curriculum. The chemistry faculty at Loyola all maintain active research programs in a variety of disciplines, including Computational, Organic, Inorganic, Atmospheric, and Biochemistry. Importantly, Loyola students can work alongside the faculty members either during the summer or during the academic year for credit. Please see the student research page for more information.

We have published our results in peer-reviewed scientific journals (many with Loyola undergraduate students as co-authors) and presented our research at national and international conferences. Examples of our diverse research areas include:

  • Synthesis and characterization of novel organometallic compounds.
  • Computational studies of the interaction of HIV and SARS drugs with their protein targets.
  • Synthesis of naturally occurring anti-fungal molecules.
  • Elucidation of the mechanism of cellulose processing enzymes.
  • Study of the effect of trace gases on ocean biogeochemistry.
  • Synthesis of molecules with potential for the treatment of osteoporosis.

For more specific information on these research projects, see the individual faculty web pages.
